Meet the Artist

Carla O’Brien’s career as a visual artist began in 2009 after experiencing the world-renowned Burning Man festival in Nevada, USA. Her primary medium is LED Neon Flex, a revolutionary replacement of traditional Glass Neon. She creates awe-inspiring neon art installations now seen at festivals and events and in restaurants, bars and in peoples’ private collections. Her highly interactive neon installations are social media and crowd favourites.

O’Brien’s signature neon art piece NEON ANGEL WINGS were first seen at White Night Melbourne in 2015 and went globally viral in 2016 when Katy Perry Instagrammed a photo of herself ‘wearing’ the Wings at the Burning Man festival in Nevada USA in 2016. In January 2020 the Neon Angel Wings went global when three pairs were a feature installation at the Festival of Light in Birmingham and Southampton, UK.

O’Brien has had solo month-long exhibitions of her neon work and has been a feature artist at many festivals across Australia.

O’Brien’s creativity has always included street art -guerrilla and commissioned. In 2015 she painted the Micheltorena Stairs in Silverlake, which have now become a world-famous iconic photo stop in Los Angeles, CA and in 2019 she replicated them in Miami Beach, QLD. Her ‘Quarantrees’ created during the Covid-19 pandemic saw trees with facemasks throughout Melbourne and went on to be commissioned by Chapel Street Precinct, Prahran.

From 1997-2012 O’Brien lived in Los Angeles, CA, USA and founded Mecco, Inc. to launch various creative entrepreneurial endeavours, the most successful being Fortune Tee -t-shirts featuring fortune cookie messages and lucky numbers gift packaged in Chinese take-out boxes.
