During Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Carla O’Brien worked with local traders in Albert Park to install neon artworks in their shopfront windows, bringing light and energy to otherwise quiet streets. The glowing displays encouraged locals to keep walking the neighbourhood, safely reconnect with their surroundings and continue supporting small businesses during an isolating time.

Alongside this, O’Brien launched a guerrilla street art initiative titled “Quarantrees,” placing face masks on trees across Melbourne as a subtle, thought-provoking reflection of the moment. What began as an independent public gesture was later formally commissioned by Chapel Street Precinct, Prahran - demonstrating how responsive, place-based art can uplift community morale while evolving into recognised cultural contribution.
